Yoga Foundations Certificate
About This Course
Yoga Foundations Certificate | Online, EFWA
How this programme is delivered
This programme is delivered entirely online. Lectures and assessments are completed remotely at your own pace, with tutor support through the course Q&A. There is no in-person practical observation.
About this course
Yoga is usually taught as practice first and anatomy second. This programme reverses that order.
You will study how the body produces and controls movement — joint action, muscle function, the physiological systems that support exertion — and then look at asana practice through that lens. The result is not a longer list of postures, but a clearer understanding of why a posture does what it does, and why the same posture suits one body and not another.
What this course is and is not
This is a foundation programme. The practical component is an introduction to asana practice rather than a full teacher training, and it does not lead to Yoga Alliance registration or RYT status.
We are explicit about this because we would rather you enrol knowing exactly what you are buying. If registered teacher status is your goal, a Yoga Alliance-accredited 200-hour programme is the route to take. What this course offers is the anatomical and physiological grounding that most 200-hour programmes cover only briefly — and that grounding transfers to any style or school you go on to study.
The academic foundation
The theoretical core is shared across all EFWA programmes and included here in full:
Foundation 1 — Locomotor System Anatomy: the skeletal and muscular systems, with a knowledge assessment.
Foundation 2 — Exercise Physiology: energy systems and the mechanisms of muscle contraction and movement production.
Foundation 3 — Systems Anatomy and Physiology: respiratory and cardiovascular function, with a knowledge assessment.
These modules are written and delivered by Dr Mert Eray Onen, author of Anatomy of the Locomotor System, who has taught anatomy and kinesiology at university level since 2004.

Who teaches what
Theoretical modules are delivered by Dr Mert Eray Onen. Practical demonstrations are delivered by Melisa Arslan, a Master Instructor with the International Pilates Federation who holds master-level certification in both Pilates and Yoga and has been teaching for many years.
What you will learn
Applied anatomy. The joints, muscles and movements involved in foundation asana, and how load is distributed through the body in each.
Physiological basis. How the muscular, respiratory and cardiovascular systems respond to sustained postural work.
Foundation asana. Core postures with modifications for different bodies and abilities.
Breathing technique. The mechanics of respiration and how breath supports movement.
Who this course is for
Practising yoga teachers who want a stronger anatomical foundation than their original training provided.
Movement and fitness professionals — personal trainers, Pilates instructors, therapists — adding yoga to what they already teach.
Committed practitioners who want to understand their own practice at a structural level.
Those preparing for further study, building an anatomical base before a 200-hour programme.
Unlimited access
Your access does not end when your certificate is issued. Course materials remain available to you indefinitely, so the programme continues to serve as a reference.
Frequently asked questions
Does this qualify me to teach yoga?
Not on its own. This is a foundation certificate, not a teacher training programme. Requirements for teaching vary by country and by studio; in many places Yoga Alliance registration is the expected standard. We would encourage you to check what applies where you intend to teach.
Is it worth taking alongside a 200-hour course?
That is precisely what it is designed for. Most 200-hour programmes devote a small number of hours to anatomy. This one gives you a university-level foundation in the same subject, at your own pace, with unlimited access to return to.
Do I need prior yoga experience?
Regular practice is helpful but not essential. The anatomical modules assume no prior knowledge.

I recently completed the Yoga Instructor Level 1 Certificate program, and I can confidently say it's been a transformative experience. The comprehensive curriculum not only deepened my understanding of yoga philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methodologies but also provided practical insights through engaging multimedia content. The instructors' passion and commitment shone through, making complex concepts accessible. What sets this course apart is its emphasis on inclusivity, addressing special populations and ensuring yoga is accessible to everyone. The final certification felt like a well-earned badge of honor, marking the beginning of my fulfilling journey as a certified yoga instructor. I wholeheartedly give it five stars!
