Curriculum outline
The following outline describes the programme’s areas of study. It is not a statement that every unit is currently accessible online. Confirm the current learning materials, schedule and requirements with EFWA before booking.
- Anatomy, physiology and the locomotor system: Skeletal and muscular systems, joints and movement; heart, circulation and blood vessels; respiratory function and energy systems.
- Exercise physiology and respiratory exchange ratio: Responses and adaptations to exercise, energy demands and introductory respiratory exchange ratio (RER): what it describes, its limitations and why it is not a stand-alone diagnostic measure.
- Professional practice and client safety: Scope of practice, consent, communication, gym-floor safety, readiness screening and appropriate referral.
- Consultation and individual goals: Client needs, relevant history, suitable baseline fitness measures and realistic, collaborative goal setting.
- Gym instruction and exercise technique: Movement patterns, cardiovascular and resistance exercise, demonstration, cueing, progression and regression for individual and small-group instruction.
- Personal-training programme design: Exercise selection, session structure, training variables, progressive overload, recovery and review across suitable gym and outdoor settings.
- Strength, endurance and power foundations: Distinguishing training aims and selecting appropriate introductory methods for individual needs.
- Integrative nutrition and lifestyle: Macronutrients, micronutrients, hydration, energy balance and dietary-habit review; connecting evidence-based nutrition education with activity, sleep, recovery and behaviour. Critically examine claims and recognise referral boundaries.
- Coaching and behaviour change: Inclusive communication, motivation, adherence, feedback and reflective practice.
- Professional development and programme review: Ethical business and service delivery, record keeping, evaluation of client progress and continuing professional development.
Current online scientific foundations
Current online lessons cover the heart, blood vessels, respiratory system, skeletal system, muscular system and energy systems. These shared scientific foundations are part of the wider programme outline, not the complete personal-training curriculum.
